A form of relief that allows a person, along with their spouse and children, to stay in the United States instead of being deported to their home country.
To be eligible, the person must demonstrate they fear prosecution in their home country based on: race, gender, religion, political opinion, and/ or membership in a particular social group. Also, they must be physically present in the United States and file for asylum within one year of entering the country unless an exception applies.
Individuals granted asylum or admitted to the United States as refugees may apply for lawful permanent residency (a green card) after maintaining at least one year of continuous physical residence in the states.
Asylees can petition for their spouse and children to join them in the United States within two years of being granted asylum. The spouse and children must not be deemed inadmissible under grounds applicable to asylum seekers.
A temporary entry permit is granted to individuals otherwise inadmissible to the United States due to an emergency or significant public benefit.
Humanitarian parole expires at the end of the permit’s validity period or upon the holder’s departure from the United States.
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is granted to individuals from designated countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions that make it unsafe to return.
TPS allows individuals to live and work in the United States while protected from deportation. The validity period varies by country and may be renewed.
A nonimmigrant visa that allows victims of certain crimes and their immediate family members to live and work in the United States.
To be eligible, the victim must have suffered substantial physical, mental, or emotional abuse. They must have reported the crime to law enforcement, filed a police report, and/or be willing to testify in court. The victim must also assist law enforcement in investigating or prosecuting the suspect.
U Visas are valid for four years and protect from deportation. Holders must maintain three years of continuous physical presence in the United States to qualify for adjustment of status (lawful permanent residency).
A nonimmigrant visa that allows victims of human trafficking and their immediate family members to live and work in the United States.
To be eligible, the applicant must be a victim of human trafficking, including sex or labor trafficking. They must have cooperated with law enforcement in investigating or prosecuting the trafficker unless they are unable to do so due to trauma.
T Visas are valid for four years and provide deportation protection. Holders must maintain three years of continuous physical presence in the United States to qualify for adjustment of status (lawful permanent residency).
VAWA allows victims of domestic violence to apply for immigration benefits without the involvement or knowledge of their abuser.
Eligible applicants must have suffered battery and/or extreme cruelty by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident spouse, parent, or a US citizen child over 21 years old.

To be eligible, an individual must be under 21, unmarried, physically present in the United States, lack legal immigration status, and have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by one or both parents. Special conditions apply based on the state where the minor is domiciled.
